Graffica is an independent publication inspired by my back laneway in Sydney’s Inner West, a laneway alive with constant layers of graffiti. The project explores the tension between the clean systems of city typography, like road signs, and the raw and expressive marks of graffiti art.
Featuring excerpts from Ellen Lupton’s Thinking with Type and Ganoti Roula and Laskari Iro’s research on environmental graphic design. Placing these texts in dialogue with images of my chaotic and ever changing lane to consider how language, signage, and traces of defiant expression shape urban identity. Using risograph printing, gritty bitmapped imagery, and interactive elements like a dual-logo cover and tip-in pages, the magazine embraces imperfection while exploring how cities communicate culture and community.PRINT
